How the unscrambler works

You type in a group of letters, and the unscrambler searches through a dictionary of over 370,000 English words, returning every word whose letters can be formed from the ones you entered. Words are grouped by length — longest first — because the longer words usually score higher in word games like Scrabble and Words with Friends.

Under the hood we build a frequency signature of your input (how many of each letter you have) and compare it to the frequency signature of every dictionary word. If a dictionary word's signature is a subset of yours, it's a valid unscramble. This is far faster than trying every permutation — even for 15-letter inputs, results appear in milliseconds once the dictionary has loaded.

Tips for getting the best results

Use the advanced filters. If you know a word has to start with ST or contain a Q, narrowing down the results makes the list much easier to scan. This is especially useful for puzzles like Wordle, where you already know some of the letters in their correct positions.

Include blanks as question marks. If you're playing Scrabble and have a blank tile, type ? in place of the blank. The unscrambler will treat it as a wildcard that can stand in for any single letter.

Click any word to copy it. Handy when you want to paste your play straight into a game chat.

Frequently asked questions

Is this unscrambler free?

Yes. It's completely free, no sign-up, no download. We cover hosting with the ads you see on the page.

What dictionary do you use?

We use an open-source word list of more than 370,000 English words (loaded on demand from a public CDN). It covers the standard Scrabble dictionaries plus a long tail of rarer but valid words.

Does it work for Scrabble and Words with Friends?

Yes. The dictionary is broader than either official list, so almost every valid play will show up. Cross-check with the official list for tournament play.

Can I use it for Wordle?

Absolutely. Type the five letters you've tried, set Exact length to 5, and use Starts with / Ends with / Must contain to match the green and yellow hints.

Do you store my searches?

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser — nothing about your input is sent to our servers. See the privacy policy for details on the ads and analytics we use.
